Deputy Chief of Police/Captain

Job Description/Responsibilities

The Deputy Chief of Police is the second in command of the city’s police department and is responsible for exacting proper performance of all subordinate department personnel to ensure a safe environment for the citizens of the city. This person is responsible for the proficiency, discipline, appearance and overall professionalism of the department’s sworn and non-sworn personnel. Duties also include assisting the Chief in formulating policies and regulations for the department, overseeing the department’s training initiatives, assisting with the research and writing of grants as well as providing assistance with the overall administration of the department. The candidate will be responsible for successful completion of the state’s accreditation process.

 

Salary

Salary range for this position is $52,000 – $60,000, based upon experience and education. The city also offers full benefits including health care, paid vacation and sick time, VRS and life insurance.

 

Qualifications

The candidate must have an associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in a closely related criminal justice field. A minimum of (7) years of progressively responsible police experience which must include at least (3) years supervisory/management duties is acceptable; current certification as a law enforcement officer and a valid Virginia driver’s license. The candidate must possess written and oral communication skills commensurate with the level of the position, as well as knowledge in computer programs.
