Voter Registration / Information
New residents to the City, and those that have not previously registered or voted, may register to vote at the office of the General Registrar located on the first floor of the municipal Building at 2039 Sycamore Avenue. Registration forms may also be picked up at government agencies including US Post Offices, libraries, the Division of Motor Vehicles and Social Services offices. Citizens may register to vote at any time of the year with the exception of 29 days before any election.
To be eligible to vote in Buena Vista elections, you must be:
a) A resident
b) A citizen of the United States
c) 18 years old by the next election date
d) Not have been convicted of a felony or have had your civil rights restored
e) Not currently declared mentally incompetent by a court of law

If you will be absent from the City on Election Day or are physically unable to vote in person and wish to vote by absentee ballot, you must meet one of the following criteria:
• Student away at school OR spouse of student
• Out of town on business
• Out of town on personal business or vacation
• Unable to go to polls because of physical disability or illness
• Primary caretaker of a confined family member
• Awaiting trial and under confinement
• Serving time for misdemeanor conviction
• Electoral Board member, Registrar, or Officer of Election
• Religious obligation
• Active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces or Merchant Marine OR spouse or dependents of Active duty service person away from the area
• Employed in business outside the continental U. S. OR spouse or dependents overseas
Any resident meeting one of the above criteria may vote absentee in person or by mail.
To vote in person resident should come to the office (Office of Registrar) and complete the absentee ballot application. If qualified, and the ballots are ready, you may vote at that time.
To vote by mail or to request an absentee ballot application a qualified voter should call, write, fax, or e-mail the Office of Registrar. Applicant must submit an absentee ballot application for each election in which they wish to vote.
