45th Annual Labor Fest Packs in the Fun
The City of Buena Vista is preparing to throw a big bash to celebrate its 45th Annual Labor Day Festival. Long known as the unofficial kickoff of the election season, Buena Vista attracts state office candidates for its annual parade and campaign speeches. This year, there will be new wrinkles to get everyone’s attention, including a five-band free concert, bed race, games and more, capped by end of the evening fireworks. (Click here to view the event flyer)
The festivities start on Sunday, September 6th, with Sing for America featuring the group Grumpy Old Men. This patriotic concert will be held at the Glen Maury Park Multi-Purpose Pavilion. As with all festivities associated with Buena Vista’s Labor Day Festival, there is no fee to attend the concert.
Everyone is invited Monday to start the day with a good run. The annual 5K Road Race will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Camden Field. The race is a flat course that is fun to run for both the novice and advanced runner.
At 9:30 a.m., the parade will begin at 23rd and Magnolia Avenue. New this year is the inclusion of a pet parade to lead the event. The Grand Marshall of this year’s parade is Miss Virginia United States Rebecca Pence and the 2015 State Champion Parry McCluer Fighting Blues Softball Team and Track Team members. The parade route will be shorter this year. The parade will end at 17th and Magnolia Avenue so everyone will have time to reach Glen Maury Park for the rest of the festivities. Anyone interested in entering the parade can do so by calling 540 261-7321.
The Opening Ceremonies will begin at 10:45 a.m., with political speeches starting at 11:00 a.m. at the Multi-Purpose Pavilion.
The first of five bands will begin at 11:30 p.m. The Marla Palma Band will start things off with a mix of blues, soul and even a hint of country. Our second act, The Guano Boys, take the stage at 1:20 p.m. with a mix of island music creating a distinct summertime groove. The Konnection Band will take the stage starting at 3:10. This party band is a crowd favorite with a mix of Top 40, country, rock, beach, oldies and more. Our fourth act is SOCO. An annual Fridays in the Park concert band, SOCO brings a classic and 90s rock vibe to the stage starting at 5 p.m. The final band of the night is crowd favorite Southpaw. The country, rock and southern rock party band will take the stage at 7 p.m. and play to the conclusion of the festival.
This year, the event will feature the Billy Oyler Skate Pavilion as a second stage. The new venue will host the annual Baby Contest at 12:30 p.m., the Blue Ridge Mountain Cloggers at 1:30 p.m., and the Rebels of Rhythm Cloggers at 2:00 p.m.
The 2015 Labor Day festivities will see the return of the Bed Race. A longtime-gone exciting event in the community, the Bed Race will be reborn near Secrist Field starting at 2:30 p.m. The bed race will be comprised of four rounds. Each team entered will have four people and one alternate pushing the bed down the 200 foot track. Contact the Park Office at 540 261-7321 for rules and additional information.
Glen Maury Park is also proud to introduce Mark Cline to perform the “Ring of Fire” stunt, jumping his bike through an actual ring of fire.
This does not include all the other fun activities such as Corn Hole, arts and crafts, inflatables, pony rides, face painting and great food.
Of course, the event would not be complete without fireworks. The annual fireworks show will finish the day of festivities starting at approximately 8:30 p.m. If you would like more information on the 2015 Labor Day Festival, please call 261-7321.
